Most importantly, you will need to choose a wood that complements your existing décor and does not clash with any of the furniture you may have in the room where it is being lay.
If you are putting hardwood flooring down in a large living room, dining room or bedroom, then you can be flexible on the woods available. However should you be putting hardwood flooring down in a room that is particularly small, you need to avoid wood that are dark in colour. Dark hardwood flooring will only make the room feel smaller, so it would be advisable to go with a wood such as ash which is very light in colour but it extremely hardwearing.
Most people do tend to choose a wood that is light in colour so that the room appears larger and feels more airy and spacious.
